Rate-induced tipping to metastable Zombie fires

چکیده

Zombie fires in peatlands disappear from the surface, smoulder underground during winter, and ‘come back to life’ spring. They can release hundreds of megatonnes carbon into atmosphere per year are believed be caused by surface wildfires. Here, we propose rate-induced tipping (R-tipping) a subsurface hot metastable state bioactive peat soils as main cause fires. Our hypothesis is based on conceptual soil-carbon model subjected realistic changes weather climate patterns, including global warming scenarios summer heatwaves. Mathematically speaking, R-tipping genuine nonautonomous instability, due crossing an elusive quasi-threshold, multiple-timescale dynamical system. To explain this provide framework combining special compactification technique with concepts geometric singular perturbation theory. This allows us reduce problem quasi-threshold heteroclinic orbit limit. We identify generic cases tracking–tipping transitions via: (i) unfolding codimension-two folded-saddle-node type-I singularity for (ii) analysis codimension-one saddle-to-saddle hetroclinic heatwaves, turn revealing new types excitability quasi-thresholds.

Population Dynamics of Metastable Growth-Rate Phenotypes

Neo-Darwinian evolution has presented a paradigm for population dynamics built on random mutations and selection with a clear separation of time-scales between single-cell mutation rates and the rate of reproduction. Laboratory experiments on evolving populations until now have concentrated on the fixation of beneficial mutations. Following the Darwinian paradigm, these experiments probed popul...

Zombie cells

In This Issue In This Issue Zombie cells ooks can be deceiving—even a cell that appears healthy may be doomed to die. Ekert et al. (page 835) report that cells lacking two important caspases can survive in the short term without a growth factor, but will succumb eventually. Thus, the normal job of these caspases may be to accelerate the dying process rather than control the commitment of cells ...

Tipping points in open systems: bifurcation, noise-induced and rate-dependent examples in the climate system.

Tipping points associated with bifurcations (B-tipping) or induced by noise (N-tipping) are recognized mechanisms that may potentially lead to sudden climate change. We focus here on a novel class of tipping points, where a sufficiently rapid change to an input or parameter of a system may cause the system to 'tip' or move away from a branch of attractors. Such rate-dependent tipping, or R-tipp...

Conscious Action/Zombie Action

I argue that the neural realizers of experiences of trying (that is, experiences of directing effort towards the satisfaction of an intention) are not distinct from the neural realizers of actual trying (that is, actual effort directed towards the satisfaction of an intention). I then ask how experiences of trying might relate to the perceptual experiences one has while acting. First, I assess ...
